Margaret Smith

April 19, 1926 — May 20, 2014

Margaret Smith, 88, of Mt. Pleasant died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Park Place Elder Living. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 23, 2014, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Deborah Stowers officiating. The family will greet friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall. A memorial has been established to Shriners Children's Hospital. Born April 19, 1926 in New London Township, Margaret Louise was the daughter of Harold Elwood and Georgina Curtis Gill Pease. She was the 1944 valedictorian of her class at New London High School. Following high school she attended Parsons College in Fairfield. On July 17, 1945 she married Wendell Taft Smith in Okmulgee County, OK. During the war years, Margaret worked at the Iowa Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, IA. She was a homemaker and tended to the needs of her family. A member of First United Methodist Church, Margaret participated in the United Methodist Women. While her children were growing up she was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She was a member of West Side Mothers Club and Bethlehem Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing bridge. Survivors include her husband, Wendell, of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Bruce (Mary Ann) Smith of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Corina Sanders, Hadassah Schmitt, Marley Smith, David Murray, Renee Gomez and Wendell Ybarra; and numerous great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter, Mardell Ybarra; and two sisters, Doris Marshall and Wanda Underwood.
