Margaret E. Schmidt entered into life on September 1, 1919, near Keswick, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Fred M. and Opal Messenger Smith. She attended grade school at Aurora country school and graduated from Keswick High School. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa before returning to teach the country schools at Springdale and Aurora for five years. She was united in marriage to Richard Carl (Alec) Schmidt on May 23, 1942 at the Keswick United Methodist Church in Keswick. They farmed north of Keswick until 1979 when they moved into town. Margaret lived her whole life in the Keswick Community. She was a lifetime member of the Keswick United Methodist Church and a 61 year charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and a member of the Sorden Cemetery Association. She was actively involved with these organizations. She worked many years as a correspondent for several local newspapers. Her husband Alec preceded her in death in August 2003. Margaret entered into eternal peace on Monday, September 10, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, at the age of 88 years and 10 days. Those left to mourn her passing are her children: daughter, Carla Burdock (Don) of Keswick, IA; son, Loren Schmidt (Mary) of Keswick, IA; daughter, Deborah Herdlicka (Robert) of Cedar Rapids, IA; son, Richard C. Schmidt II of North English, IA; son, Fred Schmidt of Keswick, IA; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters Norma deBont of Keswick, IA and Phyllis Barber of Cedar Rapids, IA. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson Noah Schmidt.
