Marcia Cammack

Marcia Cammack, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22nd at 10 a.m. at Salem Friends Church with Pastor Scott Morin officiating. Interment will be in Salem South Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Lewelling Quaker Museum, ARC of Henry County, and Salem Crew Public Library. Born November 7, 1918 at her parent's home in Jackson Township, Iowa, Marcia Emeline Hannah was the daughter of John Robert and Zylpha Alzada (Byers) Hannah. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. With a passion for teaching, she attended Minot State Teachers College in Minot, ND where she received her two year elementary teaching degree. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, IA where she received her BA Degree. She furthered her training by gaining her Special Education Certification from Woodward State Institution in Woodward, IA. On May 30, 1943 she married Dale Cammack in Mt. Pleasant. The couple resided for the majority of their married life on the Cammack Farm near Salem, IA. Dale preceded her in death on November 25, 2011. Marcia taught public elementary education and was a pioneer in the teaching to the developmentally delayed. Schools in the area at which she taught included the country schools of Oak Grove, Maple Grove, Greenwood, Richwood and Lowell, and Hillsboro, Bonaparte, and Saunders and Van Allen Elementary in Mt. Pleasant. After 31 years of teaching, she retired in 1980. Active in numerous community organizations, Marcia belonged to ARC of Henry County, American Legion Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, Lewelling Quaker Shrine Board, Salem Old Settlers Committee, and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a leader and mentor for 4-H for over 50 years and a judge for Invent Iowa. She volunteered as a tutor in the Mt. Pleasant school district and was a docent at the Old Threshers schoolhouse. Her hobbies included gardening, quilting and reading. She was a member of Salem Methodist Church, and later, Salem Friends Church. Survivors include three children, Nancy (Myron) Koets of Pipestone, MN, Mark (Audrey) Cammack of Danville, CA, and Penelope "Penny" Cammack of Pipestone, MN; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Cammack of East Peoria, IL; seven grandchildren, London (Mitch Sauberman) Cammack, Brandon (Beth) Cammack, Thomas (Chris) Cammack, Jennifer (Mike) James, Anneke (Nils) Nelson, Jason (Penny) Koets, and Korey (Katie) Koets; and twelve great grandchildren, Jaden, Maylin, Oakley, Celena, Nathan, Naomi, Jared, Aubrey, Magnus, Cammack, Cole, and Kiersten. Along with her husband, Dale, Marcia is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lawrence "Larry" Cammack; three sisters, Florence Williams, Virginia Perrenoud, and Ruth Hoffman; and two brothers, Wayne Hannah and Benjamin Hannah.
