Riverside- Mahlon Joseph Gingerich, was born September 8, 1936, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Linus and Mary (Chupp) Gingerich. He attended rural school in Johnson County. Mahlon was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Swartzendruber on August 17, 1959, at the Sharon Evangelical Church in Sharon Center. He worked for Cleo Dickel before entering the service. He served 2 years in the US Army. When he returned from the service, he worked at Moore Business Forms in Iowa City, for 15 years. He also farmed and sold Archer Petroleum products for many years. Mahlon suffered a stroke in 1984 at the age of 48, and he continued to have many health problems since that time. He had a double heart valve replacement surgery in 1998. Mahlon was a loving, out going person who enjoyed visiting and being with family and friends, he enjoyed hunting and trap shooting. Mahlon died Saturday, January 26, 2008, northwest of Brighton after a sudden illness. He lived 71 years, 4 months and 18 days. He is survived by his wife Jane of Riverside; 2 daughters: Anita (Robert) Kanagy of Wellman and Carmen (Johnny) Schwartz of Kalona; 7 grandchildren: Cory Kanagy, Fairlight, Albert, Sarah, Anne, Madeline and Kathryn Schwartz; 2 brothers: Virgil (Linda) of Mishawaka, Indiana and Jacob (Betty) of Goshen, Indiana; 3 sisters: Lydia Mae (Joe) Telgren of Mt. Pleasant, Treva (Tobe) Yoder and Pauline (Emery) Yoder of Nappanee, Indiana; 1 sister-in-law Maryanna Gingerich; 5 uncles, 3 aunts and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Rueben, Ralph and Rudy; and a nephew Kermit Gingerich. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at the Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor David Boshart and Pastor Larry Rediger will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday from 6-8 pm and Tuesday after 9 am with the family present from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona.
