Mabel Viola Bontrager was born August 1, 1925 in Kalona, Iowa the daughter of John A and Lydia (Shetler) Miller. Mabel accepted the Lord as her Savior and was baptized in her youth in the Old Order Amish Church. On January 26, 1947 Mabel was married to Perry M. Bontrager in Kalona and to this union six children were born. After her marriage, she transferred her membership to Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church where she has been a faithful member for over 60 years. Mabel enjoyed many years of volunteering at the Crowded Closet and visiting with friends and family. Her greatest joy was having her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit her in her cottage and more recently as a resident at Pleasantview Home where she enjoyed socializing with her neighbors. Mabel passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 90 years.
Mabel is survived by her children Miriam (Dave) Miller of Riverside, Ruth (Paul) Hershberger of Kalona, Dan (Gloria) Bontrager of Iowa City, Lois (Marc) Plank of Wellman, Dave (Mary) Bontrager of Iowa City, Steve (Peggy) Bontrager of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren; Rhonda (Lance) Miller, Ben (Nicole) Miller, Rebecca (Perry) Shank, Brad (Jessica Yoder) Miller, Mike (Shonda) Hershberger, Jason (Jenn) Hershberger, Aaron Bontrager, Johanna (Brad) Bishop, Justin (Brenda) Plank, Allyce (Chris) Bender, Malerie Plank, Jordan and Tayler Bontrager, Kylie (Mike) Mettenburg, Drew (Cari) Bontrager, Mike and Jeff Bontrager, 2 step granddaughters; Katie (Collin) Postier and Amy Tietsort, 22 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren, a sister Ada (Frank) Yoder of Kalona and a brother Lloyd Miller of Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Mary (John) Yoder and two brothers; Ernest Miller and Ora Glen Miller, a brother-in-law John A Yoder and two sisters-in-law; Arlis Miller and Edna Miller, two nephews; James Yoder and Doug Miller, two nieces, Lois Miller and Patricia Miller, and two great grandsons; Boston and Kai Hershberger
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church rural Wellman. Pastor Elmer Miller will officiate. Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 AM Wednesday in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 22 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Ten Thousand Villages.
