North English-Mabel Viola O'Brien was born August 31, 1909 in the Little Creek area, the daughter of Merrill and Elizabeth Powers Johnston. She attended Hinkletown school. Mabel was united in marriage to Edmund J. (Ed) O'Brien on October 5, 1929 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kinross, Iowa. To this marriage they were blessed with four children. Mabel has lived in Parnell, Millersburg, Kinross and North English areas. She enjoyed being a homemaker and mom, sewing baking, helping in the community and being a friend to many. Mabel was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. Mabel died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the English Valley Care Center in North English due to having congestive heart failure for a number of years at the age of 96 years. She is survived by a son: Donald (Jan) O'Brien of North English; a daughter: Ruthanne Reel of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren: Debbra Fier, Scott O'Brien, Parke O'Brien, Shellie Striegel, John O'Brien, Renee Weldon, Beth Briddle, Erik Wilson, Josh Reel and Amy Brick and 20 great grandchildren. Mabel is preceded in death by her parents, a son: John Robert O'Brien; a daughter: Rosemary O'Brien and nine brothers and sisters: Ernest, Carl, Everett, Richard, Raymond, Allen, Edith Bower, Ethel Flanagan and Edna Johnston. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Monday, January 30, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:30 to 7:30 at the funeral home where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 pm. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
