KEOTA-Mabel Clementine Helscher, age 93, of Keota, died Friday, September 28, 2007, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota, from complications of age. Mabel was born July 3, 1914, in Des Moines County, Iowa, to Joseph and Clementine (Panther) Eibes and grew up in the Burlington area. On June 25, 1946 she married LeVernon Helscher at St. Patrick's Church in Burlington. Following marriage the couple lived in the Keota community where Mabel worked as a Nurse's Aide at Maplewood Manor for about 20 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Reading Circle. She was also a past member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Rolling Green Neighborhood Club. Survivors include five children: Pauline Crandall and husband Daniel of Iowa City, Loretta Charbonneaux and husband Rikki of Burlington, Carolyn Helscher and husband Frank Sladek, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, David J. Helscher of Clinton and Gerard T. Helscher of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother: Raymond Eibes of Burlington; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: LeVernon in 1982; infant daughter: Rita; five brothers: Ferdnand, John in infancy, William, Edward and Paul Eibes; four sisters: Amelia Eibes, Esther McDorman, Lucy Crow and Wilma Erbland and daughter-in-law: Barb Helscher. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2007, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
