Lynn G. Popham, age 91, of Iowa City, formerly of rural North English, died Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City. Lynn was born July 19, 1920, in Greene Township, Iowa County, to Bert and Mary (Hall) Popham and received his education in Wellman and Tucker schools. He lived in Wellman until age 13, then in 1934 moved back to the farm where he was born. Lynn served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On April 22, 1955 he married Gloria Sawyer of Ainsworth, Nebraska in Ottumwa, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in Iowa County until retiring in 1984. They moved to Iowa City, Iowa in October of 2007. Lynn was a member of the Champion Hill United Methodist Church and enjoyed being on the farm, working with cattle and horses, reading, spending time with his family, hunting and leather working. Survivors include his wife: Gloria of Iowa City; two sons: Scott Popham and wife Donilee of Coralville and Randy Popham and wife Virginia "Gin" of Durant; two grandchildren: Timothy Mabee and wife Megan and Kimberly Mabee; two great grandchildren, niece Sondra Herian of Norfolk, NE, and a great niece Jolynne Herian of Glasco, KS . He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Wayne Popham and Ward Popham and one sister: Ruth Wade. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Powell Funeral Home in North English, with Rev. Marlene Janssen officiating. Burial will be at Champion Hill Cemetery in rural North English. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2011, at the funeral home.
