KALONA - Lydia J. Chorpening was born April 19, 1944, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Schrock) Bontreger. On April 4, 1969, Lydia was united in marriage to Russell Chorpening Jr. in Kalona. They lived in Florida, Missouri, Texas, Philippines, and Wisconsin before returning to Kalona. Lydia was a homemaker, missionary, teacher and writer. She enjoyed painting, crafts, nature, poetry and corresponding with missionaries. She attended the Full Gospel Church. Lydia passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 73 years.
Lydia is survived by her husband Russell of Kalona; 3 daughters, Bonita (Jerry) Jerome of Mound, MN, Lacinda (Chris) Damsgard of Brooklyn Park, MN, Valencia (Ken) Peters of Spokane, WA, 11 grandchildren; 3 brothers, Jonas (Marlene) Borntreger of Oxford, Joe (Esther) Borntreger of El Paso, TX, Amos (Mary) Borntreger of Sarasota, FL, and 2 sisters Sarah (Anthony) Yoder of Joetown, and Malinda (Richard) Meeks of Mountain Home, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Barbara Borntreger.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Full Gospel Church in Kalona. Pastor Virgil Amundson will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for Shell Lake Full Gospel Missions. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is caring for Lydia and her family.
