SIGOURNEY-Luella Lindsay Burton Mathusek, age 88, of Sigourney, formerly of Cedar Falls, passed Monday, November 6, 2017, at the Sigourney Health Care Center.
Luella was born September 7, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Fielding Garr and Melba (Lindsay) Burton. She grew up in a talented musical home and played cello in the Utah Symphony as a teenager. Luella graduated from Granite High School and attended the University of Utah for one year before moving to New York to study cello. On September 8, 1949, she married Henry George Mathusek, Jr. in Salt Lake City. The couple raised their family and ran a wood flooring business together in the New York/New Jersey area. Luella was an active member of each Mormon congregation she attended and was a member of the Relief Society for 70 years. She and Henry served multiple missions in New York and a proselyting mission in Germany from 1989-1991. Luella was a skilled cellist, performing the "Hallelujah Chorus" each Christmas. She was a prolific correspondent, often including a crisp $5 bill in cards. She was also an avid genealogist and served for many years in both the Emerson, New Jersey and Cedar Falls, Iowa Family History Centers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Later in life her hobby became the extraction of Vital Records for FamilySearch Indexing. She recorded over 497,000 names. It will always be said that she spent her life loving and serving the Lord. She was a friend to all. Luella spent her life serving Heavenly Father, her family and her fellowmen.
Survivors include sons: Warren (Claudia), Jeffrey (Elia), Frederick (Janet), Robert (Gaye) and Philip (Irene); daughter: Katherine (Gary) Fagersten; son-in-law: Patrick Jackson; 47 grandchildren; 85 great grandchildren; brother: Warren Burton and sister: Elizabeth Burton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter: Pamela Jackson and brothers: Lindsay and Rulon Burton.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at Soldier Hill Ward in Emerson, New Jersey. Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Barrett Funeral Home in Tenafly, New Jersey. Visitation will also be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday at Soldier Hill Ward. Burial will be at George Washington Memorial Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.
