Lucille (Lucy) Marie Macy Stevenson, 92 of Williamsburg, Iowa died at her home May 17, 2023 following a short illness. With the care of her niece, a retired R.N., Debbie Davidson, Lucy was able to stay in her home the final weeks of her life.

Lucy was born June 2, 1930 on a farm in Buchanan Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, five and one half miles northeast of Fairfield. She was the daughter of Delbert Claude Macy and Beulah Van Dyke Macy. She received her elementary education at Buchanan No.2 (also known as Prairie Chapel) and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1948. She attended Parsons College, receiving her B.S. degree in Mathematics in 1953. During an interval of two years, she taught in her same rural school in order to pay her tuition to complete her degree. She taught Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Solid Geometry, and Trigonometry at Brighton and Cherokee, Iowa.

Lucy married John Ward Stevenson in 1956 at Barhydt Chapel on the Parsons College campus, Fairfield, Iowa. They farmed at Graham, Missouri, and Lucy taught Algebra, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry, and Trigonometry at the high school in Maryville, Missouri. John and Lucy moved to the Morse Farm in Iowa County in 1958. Lucy did substitute teaching and helped John farm after he lost his right hand in a corn picker.

Lucy was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, serving as an elder and deacon, plus teaching church school and vacation Bible school for many years. She also served six years on the United Church of Christ Conference Board. Lucy was a 50-year member of Eastern Star, served 15 years as an assistant commissioner on the Iowa County Natural Resources Service Board, and assisted with the Iowa County Women’s Land and Legacy Committee for several years. She enjoyed playing cards, reading and solving crossword and sudoku puzzles.

Lucy is survived by three sons, Jim (Bonnie), Kurt (Ellen) and Todd (Kim), plus three grandsons, Nathan Hatfield, Aaron Ward Stevenson and Andrew John Stevenson, one granddaughter, Ila Ann Stevenson, and one great-grandson, Logan James Hatfield. She is also survived by one brother, Harold A. Macy (Barbara), of Palmdale CA and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John Ward Stevenson in 1986, two infant sons, two brothers, Leonard Macy and Willard Macy, six sisters-in-law, Donna Macy, Sandy Macy, Bettie Peltzer, Marjorie Havlic, Joan Eitel, and Alice Marie Donaldson, and two nephews, John Martin Eitel and Larry Macy.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 1895 200 th Street, rural Marengo, Iowa 52301. Pastor Tim Miller will officiate. Memorials may be designated to Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo, or the Iowa Chapter of ALS.
