Lucille M. Kurtz, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Sunday, January 04, 2015, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, with The Reverend Joseph Phung officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, IA. The family will greet friends during visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Memorials can be made to the Sisters of Saint Francis in Dubuque, IA and Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant, IA. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born January 7, 1922, Lucille was the daughter of Willard Raymond and Ida Helen Giberson Brereton. She was a 1941 graduate of Fairfield High School and attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. On February 18, 1946, she married Paul J. Kurtz in East Pleasant, Plain IA. He preceded Lucille in death on July 21, 1979. During World War II, Lucille worked at the Ration Board and later at several Fairfield businesses where she was a secretary and bookkeeper. Living most of her life in the Fairfield area, Lucille was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She moved to Bettendorf, IA, in 1995, to be close to her children living in the area. She then moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2009, to be near her daughter. An avid vegetable and flower gardener, Lucille took great pleasure in sharing her produce with friends and neighbors. She loved cooking for her family and her signature chocolate chip cookies were enjoyed by all. Lucille was also a talented singer in her churchs choir and liked all types of music. Lucille is survived by three daughters, Judith (Clark) Meikle of Spring, TX, Susan Ross (Ron) Miller of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Margaret (Tom) Butler of Bettendorf, IA; three sons, Joseph (Jane) Kurtz of Saint Paul, MN, Dennis (Molly) Kurtz of North Liberty, IA, and Glenn Kurtz of Bettendorf, IA; a son-in-law, Richard Leu of Marion, IA; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; also one sister, Jean (Herb) Johnson of Fairfield, IA. Along with her husband, Paul, Lucille was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Kurtz Leu; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Jean Leu; a son-in-law, Terry Ross; three brothers, Harold Brereton, Hollis Brereton, and Glenn Brereton; and three sisters, Bernice Martin, Madelene Metz, and Dorothy Wilson.
