Williamsburg- Louis Frederick Sandersfeld was born May 14, 1932 on the farm near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Millen Frederick and Emma Anna Louise (Schwarting) Sandersfeld. He was confirmed June 2, 1946 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. He attended Lutheran Interparish School and graduated from Williamsburg Jr./Sr. High School in 1950. Louis entered the Army in 1953 and received the National Defense Medal in Medical Company and the Army of Occupational Medal in Germany. On November 4, 1956, Louis was united in marriage to Helen Joan Ohland in Malcom, Iowa. He farmed with his father, drove Delivery truck for the Amana Society Bakery, sold livestock feed for Walnut Grove 4x4 Feed and Yoder Feed Mill. He retired from housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Louis was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg and the Iburg Poulson VFW- Post #8797. He loved his hobby farm, moving to the Sandersfeld homestead, raising a variety of Fancy Chicken Breeds, sheep, cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, Peacocks, hogs, and at one point a Texas Longhorn. Attended many Iowa poultry shows (Eastern Iowa Poultry Association Show) and State Fairs. Louis won awards for his Plymouth Barred Rock, Light/Dark Brahma, and Bluff Plymouth Rock. Louis and wife Helen had a love of gardening, working the farmer's market and collecting antiques. Louis took up the guitar at a young age playing from ear. He was a member of the Buzzin Cousins Country Band, where he played piano and guitar at a various venues. Louis died on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at Amana Retirement Community-Colonial Manor in Amana, Iowa at the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his seven children: Marie (William) Aldeman of Coralville, Laura (Denny) McCaw of Tiffin, Anita (Tim) Reihmann of Marengo, Mark Sandersfeld and friend Colleen of Amana, Audrey Dimmer and friend Gary of Williamsburg, Vince (Amy) Sandersfeld of Longwood, Florida and Leon Sandersfeld of Frytown; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two sisters Elaine Wardenburg of Williamsburg and Joan (Harlan) Heitman of Sioux Falls, SD; and a brother-in-law Paul Ohland of Fort Collins, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a great granddaughter Zoe Sandersfeld; two sisters Phyllis Iburg and Evelyn Gerard; and a brother Verne M Sandersfeld.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Masks and social distancing is encouraged. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Interparish School.
