Louis F. Gugel was born December 12, 1919 in Wayland, Iowa the son of John and Tillie (Rapp) Gugel. He attended Flowers Elementary and graduated from Wayland High School in 1938. On July 18, 1948 he was united in marriage to Orpha Yoder in Wayland. She died in April of 1979. On June 16, 1984 he was united in marriage to Lois Brenneman Swartzendruber at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. Louis lived in the Wayland, Brighton and Kalona communities where he was a carpenter. He did Civilian Public Service in Colorado and Michigan, and worked in voluntary service serving three terms in Ecuador and a term in Texas. He was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. In his retirement years he caned chairs. Louis died on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona from renal failure at the age of 91 years. Louis is survived by his wife Lois of Kalona; three sons - Donald (Ruth Ann) of Washington; Duane (Karen) of Kalona; David (Julie) of Wauseon, OH; a step son Scott Swartzendruber (Beth) of Kalona; eight grandchildren - Jeremy Gugel (Lisa), Natasha Miller (Ryan), Kyle Gugel, Shannon Redig (Scotty), Aleigha Gugel, Jessica Smallman (Jeremy), Caleb Gugel, Brooke Gugel, two step grandchildren - Maryjo Rich (Matt), Wendi Neff-Ulin (Michael) seven great grandchildren - Micah, Ashlyn, Traevin Gugel, Aubrey, Cameron, Lauren Miller, Lilly Redig; and a brother Ezra Gugel of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Orpha, an infant son, a grandson Shaun Gugel, and a brother Edward Gugel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson and Pastor Dick Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Ecuador Project of Central Plains Mennonite Conference.
