WELLMAN - Lorene "Todd" Snider was born August 1, 1916, the daughter of Calvin and Hattie (Taylor) Griggs. She grew up on a farm southwest of Wellman, with her sister and two brothers. Lorene attended country school and graduated from Wellman High School in 1933. She then took "Normal Training" in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and at age 18, began teaching country school. Lorene married Henry Foster in 1937. They had two daughters, Hila Sue, and Hattie Lou. On April 6, 1946, Lorene married Wm. Clyde Snider. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, they returned to Wellman where they built the home she lived in for 70 years. They owned and operated the Wellman D-X Service station for over 30 years. She also worked for Iowa South utilities for a number of years. Lorene was honored by her family and friends with a dinner and open house for her 100th birthday last August 2016.
Lorene was a kind hearted, had many friends, and was active in many organizations over the years. In addition to volunteering as a Red Cross "Gray Lady" at he VA Hospital, she was an active member of O.E.S., T.T.T Society, Mothers Club, Priscilla Club, her beloved "three table bridge group", and the Wellman Golf Club (teaching three generations to play golf and playing well into her 90's). She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Lorene passed away with her family at her side Saturday, April 22, 2017 at her home in Wellman at the age of 100 years.
Lorene is survived by her daughter Hila Sue (Kenneth) Kempf of Wellman; grandsons: Kenneth B (Angie) Kempf of Wayland, David (Jayme) Kempf of Franklin, WI; Andrew (Bridget) Kempf, of Moline, IL; great grandchildren: Amber Kempf (Kelsey Price), Cole (Angela) Kempf, Alison (Jesse) Meade, step grandchildren: R.J., Amanda, Jenica, four great grandchildren: Hunter, Drake, Zion, Maddi, three step great grandchildren: Hayley, Caitlyn, Camden, and one newphew Steve (Jeanne) Sondag of Conroe, TX.
Lorene was preceded in death by her daughter Hattie Lou, her husband Clyde Snider, sister Evelyn (Jerry) Sondag, brothers Park (Mabel) Griggs, Lloyd (Treva) Griggs, nephew Dennis (Donna) Sondag, nieces Joan (Duane) Tadlock, and Jackie Griggs.
As Lorene wishes a Graveside Service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, April 28, 2017, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. A memorial fund has been established for the Goodwin Senior Center. Messages may be sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com
