SIGOURNEY-Loren Lee Utterback, age 79, of Sigourney, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at his home. Loren was born July 22, 1934, in Delta, to Otto and Freida (Strohman) Utterback and graduated from Delta High School in 1953. On July 1, 1954, he married Ilo Mae Sampson at the Delta Christian Church. Loren was assistant manager of Graham's Department Stores in Sigourney, Maquoketa and Oskaloosa before becoming manager of the Winterset store in 1959. He then managed the Algona Graham's from 1968 until 1978. Loren then worked at Lausers Department Store in Wilton until 1988, when he moved back to Sigourney and started his own painting business. He retired from painting in 2013. Loren was a member of the Delta Christian Church and enjoyed golfing, playing horseshoes and singing with the Utterback Quartet. His orneriness and joking will surely be missed. Survivors include four children: Dennis Utterback of Des Moines, Denise (Steve) Farrell of Ankeny, Darla (Frank) Calvert of What Cheer and Danita Carter of Oskaloosa; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one sister: Ruth Stanley of Oskaloosa and four brothers: Leland Utterback of Grinnell, Kay Utterback of Winterset, Jimmie Utterback of Missouri and Richard Utterback of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Ilo Mae; one sister: Betty Steele and four brothers: Haldean, Jack, Bruce and Larry. Memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Tioga Cemetery in rural Rose Hill. Burial will be at Tioga Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for the Keokuk County Cancer Society. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Loren and his family.
