KEOTA-Mrs. Lois L. Laing was born at Lake City, Iowa on May 20, 1914, to James Edgar and Jessie Agnes (Reed) Martin, and passed away at Maplewood Manor in Keota, Iowa, on August 29, 2005, at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 9 days. She graduated from Lake City High School in 1932, attended Morningside College from 1932 to 1933 and transferred to Grinnell College, from which she graduated in 1936. She taught school in Farnamville, Churdan, Pomeroy and Lohrville, Iowa. During World War II she worked for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. and in Virginia Beach, Virginia. On February 8, 1942, she married Bernard Laing at the Methodist Church in Rockwell City, Iowa, and lived in Rockwell City thereafter, helping to operate the Martin Motel until ill health forced her retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W., 50-year member and Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, the National Council of Teachers of English, P.E.O., L.L.L., S.C.M.I. and Reading Circle. Surviving is her son, Donald Neale Laing of Keota, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2005, at the Rosehill Cemetery in Rockwell City, with Rev. Dr. Dana Wimmer officiating. Burial will follow at the cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
