Lloyd H. Van Winkle Jr. was born August 17, 1927 in Fort Madison, Iowa the son of Lloyd and Ruth (Genck) Van Winkle Sr. He graduated from Fort Madison High School. He served in the United States Marines during WWII and the Korean War. In 1952 he was married to Gladys Siegfried, they later divorced. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 22 years as a perishable inspector. He lived in Chicago and Streator, Illinois before moving to Iowa City in 1991. In 1997 he married Dora Kleinschmidt in Shamrock, Texas. Lloyd was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Last year he had the opportunity to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Lloyd enjoyed fishing and spending time with family. Lloyd died on Friday, March 22, 2013 at his daughter's home in Fort Madison at the age of 85 years. Lloyd is survived by his wife Dora of Iowa City, three children - Janet Ough of Fort Madison; Lloyd Van Winkle III of St. Louis, Missouri; Carol Van Winkle of Tampa, Florida; 17 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Vicki Rhodes, a grandson, a great grandson, and a sister Mary Stein. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Pastor Mark Pries will officiate. Burial will be in the St John's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established for Great River Hospice.
