Lloyd C. Barnes, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, IA passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in the emergency room of Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Friday, March 25, 2016, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Born on April 12, 1926, in Nebraska, Lloyd Calvin was the son of Charles Bryant and Ethel (Manning) Barnes. He received his education from rural schools. On April 12, 1944 he married Norma Darlene Nelson in Wichita, KS. She preceded him in death on June 28, 1982. Lloyd then married Frances Lawrence on March 4, 1989, in Ottumwa, IA. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2000. Lloyd served four years in the U.S. Armed Forces and during his service built roads in Alaska. In his younger years, Lloyd enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles. He will be remembered as a lifelong agriculturist who kept his land immaculate. Lloyd farmed for over 60 years in Henry County and in Van Buren County, near Stockport, IA. Lloyd trained horses, liked to run a bulldozer for excavating projects, and was recognized as a skilled mechanic. In later years he loved to use his mechanical talents to restore tractors and bulldozers. Lloyd served on the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Board of Directors. Survivors include a son, Layne (Judy) Barnes of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a daughter, Brenda (Tony) Gonzalez of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two step-daughters, Roberta (Ed) Borders of Rosamond, CA, and Rita (Rick) Mullin of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and four grandchildren, Jesse Barnes, Janel Barnes, Loren Gonzalez, and Brendan (Gabriele) Gonzalez; three step-grandchildren, Marcus (Courtney) Mullin, Dawn (Dennis) daCruz, Kris (Janet) Borders; and a very special friend, Elaine Tweedy. He is also survived by three brothers, Charles Allen, Eddie Wayne and Roger; as well as one sister, Alda. Along with his loving wives, Norma and Francis, Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; by four brothers, Dennis, Frank, Chauncey and Melvin; and three sisters, Bessie, Mildred and Ardith.
