Lester Richard Fetzer was born August 25, 1920 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Walter Jonathan and Elsie Marie (Gerard) Fetzer. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1938. Les served in the United States Army Air Core as a Sergeant during WWII. Les was united in marriage to Doris Jean Frederick on April 23, 1949 in Cedar Rapids. He farmed west of Williamsburg all of his life until retiring in 1985. Les and Jean moved to Williamsburg in 1980 and then the Highland Ridge Presbyterian Home in the spring of 2007. Les was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing cards, spending time with grandchildren, riding his bicycle, traveling and taking evening walks. Les died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Highland Ridge Care Center at the age of 92 years. He is survived by his wife Jean of 64 years; eight children: Michael (Bernita) Fetzer of Cedar Rapids, David (Jeannie) Fetzer of Williamsburg, Gerald (Sandy) Fetzer of Marion, Diane (Bob) Embury of Plattsmouth, NE, Kevin (Susan) Fetzer of Lancaster MA, Sheila (Craig) Stanerson of Williamsburg, Denise (Paul) Gengler of LeMars and Pamela (Stuart) Stahl of Ankeny; 27 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; two brothers: James Fetzer of San Antonio, TX, and Howard (Ann) Fetzer of Downers Grove, IL; three sisters: Shirley (James) Alberhasky and Marlene (Robert) Seydel both of Iowa City and Mary Jane Schenkal of Normal, IL. Les was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings: Lloyd Fetzer, Charles (Barney) Fetzer, Margaret Yoder, Raymond Fetzer, and three in infancy. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am Friday, August 16, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. There will be a Rosary followed by a prayer service at 3:00. There will be a VFW Service at 6:30 also on Thursday. Memorials are for the Iburg Poulson VFW Post # 8797, St. Mary's Catholic Church or Highland Ridge Care Center.
