Leonard Joseph Carney

Parnell-Leonard Joseph Carney was born July 15, 1943 in rural Deep River, Iowa, the son of Louis and Genevieve (Dont) Carney. He was a 1961 graduate of Williamsburg High School. Leonard was united in marriage to Judith Ann Rugg on April 25, 1964 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. He worked as assistant manager for Me Too Foods in Williamsburg during high school. He later was employed by the Iowa County Secondary Road Department as a road superintendent retiring after 30 years. Leonard was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He coached Parnell Little League for 12 years. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, the Green Bay Packers, the Dodgers and especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. Leonard passed away Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City with his family by his side at the age of 74 years.

Leonard is survived by his wife Judy of Parnell; three children: Brett (Jen) Carney of Parnell, Carman (Steve) Meade of Olathe, KS and Bartt (Jane) Carney of Centerville; 11 grandchildren: a brother: Marvin Carney of Marengo and two sisters: Donna Grimm of Cedar Rapids and Shirley (Dean) Stoddard of Williamsburg and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law: Pat Carney and a brother-in-law: Bennie Grimm.



Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, Thursday, November 2, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg were there will be a prayer service at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Parnell Youth Baseball Program.
