Leonard Doyle (Johnnie) Hollingsworth, 88, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. A celebration of his life will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 with Revs. Joel Love and David Wilkening officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Monday, May 18th at the funeral home with Masonic Rites following. Burial will be in the Pennington Cemetery near Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. Leonard Doyle (Johnnie) Hollingsworth was born on July 31, 1920, on a farm southeast of Hayesville, IA, a son of Ira and Myrtle Kinkade Hollingsworth. He attended several country schools in Keokuk County and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1938. He was united in marriage to Bessie Jean Wilkening on August 21, 1940 in Lancaster, MO. They moved to a farm east of North English in 1942 and farmed for 66 years. Johnnie was a former member of the Kinross and English Valleys School Boards. He was a 50 year member of the Kinross Masonic Lodge, had served on the English Valleys Cooperative Creamery Board, the Knoll Ridge Country Club Board, and as a Keokuk County Supervisor from 1981 to 1984. Johnnie died on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 16 days. Johnnie is survived by his wife Bess of rural South English; a son Gary ( Brenda ) Hollingsworth of of Coralville, IA; daughters Kathy (Sid) Moore of South English, IA and Jayne (Joel) Love of Reinbeck, IA; 10 grandchildren: Mark Hollingsworth of Los Angeles, CA, Mandy Hollingsworth of Coralville, IA, Matthew Hollingsworth of Centennial, CO, Brad (Brenda) Moore of North English, IA, Brent (Brooke) Moore of Newhall, IA, Brian (Tracy) Moore of Altoona, IA, Brock (Danielle) Moore of North English, IA, B. J. (Anne Tedore) Love of Chicago, IL, Jonathan (Jessie) Love of Cedar Falls, IA, and Geoffrey (Jess) Love of Ames, IA. 12 great grandchildren: Shay, Lexie & Clayton Moore, Grace & Jack Hollingsworth, Bailey Alderson, Brayden & Bowen Moore, Cody & Karsyn Moore, and Ashton & Emmerson Moore; sisters Helen Reed of Ottumwa, IA and Ruth Coble of Dubuque, IA; a sister-in-law Mary Hollingsworth of Waterloo, IA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Howard, Chester and Willard Hollingsworth, and sisters Maxine Bond, Ethel Hayes, Opal Parr and Margaret Newman.
