Williamsburg-Leona Annette Haworth was born October 24, 1917 in Hazelton, Iowa, the daughter of Linn and Anna (Holmstrom) Schermerhorn. She graduated from Hazelton High School and St. Luke's Nursing School in 1938. Leona was united in marriage to Verne Haworth on January 1, 1939 in Cedar Rapids. Leona worked as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, in private service, Wilson's Packing and Dr. Keith Woodhouse's office. After retiring, she received her handwriting certification in 1972. She was a federal handwriting expert in question documents and a member of AAHA. Leona later received her certification in drug and alcohol counseling, working in Independence, Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids. In 1991 she moved to Williamsburg to be close to her family. She will be greatly missed by her family as a caring mother and grandmother and friends for her caring friendship, piano playing and good food. Leona died Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness at the age of 90 years and 3 days. She is survived by her son: Allen (Betty) Haworth of Williamsburg; a daughter: Judith Wit of East Hampton, New York; three grandchildren: Brad (Marsha) Haworth and Cari Haworth all of Williamsburg and Simon Ginsberg of New York City, New York; four great grandchildren: Brittney, Abby, Nicole and Bobbi all of Williamsburg and a sister: Corrine Wessling of Missouri. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, husband in1989 and her two brothers and wives: Dale (Mimi) Schermerhorn and Alfred (Jeanette) Schermerhorn. Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Visitation will be Tuesday from noon until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.
