Leola Verle Marner was born December 10, 1929 in Wood River, Nebraska, the daughter of John S. and Laura (Beckler) Stoltzfus. In 1940 Verle and her family moved to the Wellman and Kalona area. She attended Iowa Mennonite High School. On June 20, 1948 she was united in marriage to Wallace D. Marner at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Verle was a homemaker and helped Wallace on the farm. She was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, was active in Mennonite Women, taught Sunday School and vacation Bible School. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers and spending time with her grandchildren. Verle died on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 84 years.
Verle is survived by a son Dale (Linda) Marner of Kalona; a daughter Karen (Duane) Gugel of Kalona; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Einer (Mary Ellen) Stoltzfus of Kalona; Richard (Jacque) Stoltzfus of Johnstown, Colorado; and a sister Grace (Gerald) Maye of Riverside. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wallace; 3 sisters: Donna Lee Stoltzfus, Darlene Mae Stoltzfus, and Elvira Yoder; and 2 brothers; Sterling and John Jr.
Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am Friday, September 5, 2014 at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church rural Kalona. Pastor Don Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 2-8 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home and Iowa City Hospice.
