Williamsburg- Leo Michael Smith, Sr. was born December 13, 1936 in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Marie (Stockman) Smith. He graduated from Tiffin High School in 1955. In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas for two years. He also served as a Army Reserve for four years being discharged in 1961. Leo was united in marriage to Anna Marie Hahn on November 26, 1960. To this union they were blessed with five children: Michael, Carolyn, Lawrence, Leo Jr. and Debra. They later divorced. Leo farmed in the Holbrook area for 45 years. In addition to farming he was an Ag mechanic and a truck driver. In later years he delivered auto parts in Iowa City retiring in 2011. He enjoyed puzzles, bowling, playing cards, hunting, fishing, going on vacation with family and attending all of his children and grandchildren's activities. Leo was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Farm Bureau. Leo passed away Thursday, September 13, 2012 at home at the age of 75 years. He is survived by 5 children: Michael (Julie) Smith of North English, Carolyn Crew of Williamsburg, Lawrence "Larry" (Tammy) Smith of Conroy, Leo Jr. (Sherri) Smith of Williamsburg and Debra (Mike) Rogers Laquey, MO; 18 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Hubert ( Shirley) Smith of Coventry, RI and Dean (Sylvia) Smith of Oxford; 2 sisters: Arlene (Art) Miller and Ruby (Carson) Potter all of Oxford. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harry Smith and a sister Barbara Smith. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Monday, September 17, 2012 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday. Memorials are for Williamsburg High School Athletic Department or Iowa County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
