Leo Cloyd Vercande was born on September 24, 1930 near Williamsburg, IA, the son of Joseph Cloyd and Martha Anna Schwarting Vercande. His family moved to the North English area in 1940. Leo attended Gritter Creek Country School and graduated from North English High School in 1949. Leo served his country by joining the US Air Force and worked as an aircraft mechanic in Japan. He was also a pilot and at one time had his own plane. He moved to Cedar Rapids and worked as a farm mechanic for Happel & Sons for many years. Leo married Patricia Faye Dansdill Perrin in 1962 and adopted her two sons. They also had two children of their own. He loved to read westerns, fish and always enjoyed working in his garden. He was a former member of St. Ludmilla Catholic Church before joining St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Leo became a resident of the English Valley care Center in North English in March 2002. Leo died on Monday, September 1, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA following a short illness. He is survived by 3 sons: Jon (Rhonda) Vercande of Cedar Rapids, IA; Jeff (Amy) Vercande of Lawrenceville, GA: Michael Vercande of Des Moines, IA; a daughter Linda (Kerry) Baetsle of Ladora, IA; 3 stepchildren: Jeanne White of Cedar Rapids, IA; Ron Perrin and Sue Perrin both of Clutier, IA; 20 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brothers: Eldon (Peggy) Vercande, Dale (Darlene) Vercande & Benny (Jan) Vercande all of North English, IA and Robert (Mary Ann) Vercande of Hills, IA. Also surviving is a brother-in-law Larry Fuller of North English, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Maryann Fuller. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. Pat Lumsden officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross, IA. Visitation will be from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Wednesday, September 3, 2008.
