KEOTA-Lee Junior Henry, age 89, of Keota, died Friday, October 30, 2009, at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Junior was born September 22, 1920, near Valley, Iowa, to Lee B. and Matilda "Tillie" (Augustine) Henry. He grew up in the Valley and Rubio communities and attended Shinbone country school. He was baptized and belonged to the Valley Evangelical Church. Junior served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. On April 28, 1946, he married Lorene Dawson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple lived on and farmed a Century Farm south of Keota. In addition to farming, Junior was an assistant soil commissioner and full-time soil commissioner from 1965 until 1979. In 2000 he received the Soil Conservation Award. Junior was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion and served as a Director for Farmers Savings Bank in Keota. He enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great grandchild, farming and raising his livestock. He loved horses and hitching them up for parades. Junior also liked playing cards and visiting with neighbors and friends. Survivors include his wife: Lorene of Keota; two children: Linda (Gene) Heisdorffer of Sigourney and Larry (Noni) Henry of Keota; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters: Janis Larson of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and Joan Walker of Hubbard; one sister-in-law: Colleen Vail of Sigourney; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law: Elmer and Hazel (Hollingsworth) Dawson and brother-in-law: Ward Dawson. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2009, at the funeral home. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Junior and his family.
