Lawrence F. Moore, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, December 01, 2011 at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit. A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 3rd from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 4th at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Herb Shafer and Pastor Betsey Neipert officiating. Inurnment will be at the Oregon Township Cemetery prior to the service on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with full military rights by the Olds Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be given to the Finley Chapel or the Fellowship Cup Food Pantry. Born April 7, 1923 in Washington County, Lawrence was the son of Frank and Lulu Effie (Hunt) Moore. He spent his formative years in the Ainsworth area where he attended school through his sophomore year. He then took over the family farm until his father recovered from an accident. In July, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving during WWII where he was engaged in the battle at Normandy. He worked as a motor machinist until his discharge in February 1946. When he returned from his service in the Navy, he married Virginia Mae Hopping on October 20, 1946 in Ainsworth, IA. In the late 1940s Lawrence owned and operated the Shell Truck Stop in Ainsworth, IA. After trading the business in 1952, he worked as a farmer and a carpenter. Lawrence and his wife farmed, and Lawrence did construction work in the Swedesburg area. In 1993 they moved to Mt. Pleasant. His favorite hobby was working with a scroll saw with which he made many projects in his retirement. He enjoyed camping and belonged to four camping groups; the Huntsman Campers, Good Sam Club, National Campers and Hikers, and Winnebago Campers where he served as the state president in 1994. He also enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage. He was a member of Finley Chapel and the Olds American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Virginia; six children, Thomas (Joyce) Moore and Bruce Moore, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Kathryn (Richard) Schenk of Washington, IA, Terry (Vickie) Moore of Columbus Junction, IA, Rennie (Deborah) Moore of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Sherry (Jim) Tibbs of Grandview, MO; a brother, William (Linda) Moore of Marshalltown, IA; forty-six grandchildren including their spouses; forty-five great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Shirley Conry of Washington, IA and Margaret Reed of Omaha, NE; and one brother-in-law, Robert (Mary Lou) Hopping of Floral, AK. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond, and a sister, Dorothy both in infancy; a son, Bill Mattocks; two grandsons, Micheal Johnson and Brian Mattocks; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Sammons.
