Lawrence E. Whetstine was born on October 8, 1912 near Wellman, Iowa, a son of Melvin and Anna Steiner Whetstine. He attended Smith Creek country school and graduated from Wellman High School in 1931. Lawrence was a life long farmer in the Wellman area. On February 29, 1936, he was united in marriage to Margaret Aileen Riddle in Oskaloosa, Iowa.. She preceded him in death in May 1967. Lawrence married H. Louise Hayes at her home in Washington on December 14, 1968. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church for 84 years and served on numerous church committies. Lawrence sold Washington County Farmer's Mutual Insurance for many years. He was a 4-H leader and had a great fondness for horses. Lawrence's hobby and love was for his family and working in his wood shop. He died suddenly at his home near Wellman on Sunday, March 9, 2008. He lived 95 years, 5 months and 1 day. He is survived by his wife H. Louise of Wellman; four children: Angelene Ornduff (Ron) of Ainsworth; Edward Whetstine ( Sally) of Wellman; Larry Whetstine ( Mildred) of Wellman; Carol Hough (Jay) of West Chester; two step children: Sandy Greiner (Terry) of Keota and Douglas Hayes (Margaret) of Normal, Il. He has 12 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 12 step great grandchildren. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, an infant brother and brother Gerald Whetstine. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman, with the Rev. Rich Pippert officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 7 PM with Masonic Rites at 7 PM, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman on Tuesday, March 11, 2008. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. A memorial fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church.
