LaVerne was born on June 8, 1931, in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Mellen William and Mae Ferne Schmidt. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School and Williamsburg High School. On January 17, 1950, LaVerne was united in marriage to Adolph Carl Walters at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
LaVerne was a homemaker, always putting her family first and how very proud she was of her family. She was a farm wife, tending to chickens, livestock, raising a garden and lending a hand in the fields. She enjoyed cooking and baking pies. Over the years, LaVerne shared her talents by working as a cook for the Clear Creek School District, the Oxford Sale Barn and Oxford Super 60’s. Everyone knew when LaVerne was in the kitchen the meal would be the best! She enjoyed sewing, making prom and bridesmaids dresses and was an amazing seamstress who replaced countless zippers and made garments fit perfectly for so many. LaVerne was a member of the Oxford Ladies Card Club and always enjoyed a good card game, especially Euchre. She'd set you without a blink of an eye! LaVerne was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. Being a child of God and her faith was extremely important to her.
LaVerne is survived by her children: Linda (Ken) Vawter of Newhall and Kenny (Marcia) Walters of Oxford; four grandchildren: Kelcy (Aaron) Brecht of Ankeny, Eric (Joy Popelar) Vawter of Newhall, Camille (Tim) Gott of Ryan and Travis (Carrie Roller) Walters of Oxford; six great grandchildren: Brody (fiancé Tayla Ayers) Brecht, Adyson Brecht, McCoy Walters, Sophie Gott, Brooklynn Roller and Blaire Walters; a brother: Vernon (Shirley) Schmidt of Williamsburg; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
