Williamsburg-LaVerna Sophia Johanna Folkmann was born May 16, 1927, rural Homestead, the daughter of Rudolph and Dora (Witte) Sandersfeld. She was baptized June 12, 1927 and confirmed on April 6, 1941 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. LaVerna was united in marriage to Merlin Folkmann on April 24, 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Together they lived and farmed in the Williamsburg community. LaVerna also was a head cook for Colony Village for a number of years. She enjoyed baking pies, cinnamon rolls and making potato salad, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy where she served on the Ladies Guild. LaVerna passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 89 years.
She is survived by four children: Sharon (Marvin) Maas of Williamsburg, Kathy (Randy) Furler of Austin, TX, Kenneth (Shelley) Folkmann of Marengo and Sandra (Colin) Pinney of South Amana; 10 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister: Dolores Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg and a brother: Robert Sandersfeld of Amana. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2015 and two brothers: Victor and Russell Sandersfeld.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Trinity Lutheran Church, Lutheran Interparish School or Essence of Life Hospice.
