Laura June Martin

Laura June Martin, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016, at her home. Visitation will be from 10:00 -11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow beginning 11:00 a.m., at the church, with Pastor Earl Swigart officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Born on June 1, 1921, in Winfield, IA, Laura June was the daughter of Ellis and Florence McCleary Kongable. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1939. On March 8, 1942, June married Francis Harry Martin in Schuyler County, MO. After high school graduation, June taught school in a one-room schoolhouse and later worked as a waitress in Fairfield, IA. She and her husband operated the Dog N' Suds restaurant in Fairfield, and also The Diner in Mt. Pleasant. June worked at the IAAP and at Heatilator in Mt. Pleasant, for many years until her retirement. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. June enjoyed word puzzles, made quilts for her family, and was known as a great seamstress, cook and cookie maker. She was very much loved by her grandchildren, and her family referred to her as "Grandma Cookie." She helped her grandchildren in any way possible. Survivors include two sons, Larry (Ruth) Martin of Fairfield, IA and Craig Martin of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two daughters, Dianna (Melvin) Williams of Mexico, MO and Janice (Jim) Russell of Burlington, IA; a brother Robert Kongable of Prattsville, AL; four sisters, Evelyn Bock of Wayland, IA, Corene (Howard) McMillan of Clinton, TN, Eleanor Schneider of Wapello, IA, and Vergene (Don) Lathrum of Gardner, KS. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild Along with her husband and parents, June was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Uitermarkt and a son, Stanley, in infancy. She was also preceded in death by two brothers; Arnold Kongable and Denzell Kongable; and three sisters: Lucille Wilhite, Pauline Coberley, and Doris Hoy.
