Larry Schachel

CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS-Larry Lee Schachel, age 77, of Carbondale, Illinois, died Thursday, September 26, 2024, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

 Larry was born December 5, 1946, in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of William Schachel, Sr. and Margaret (Federspiel) Schachel. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1964 and served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. On February 24, 1973, he married Joy Ann Greiner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. The couple lived and raised their children in Rock Island, Illinois until 2015, when they moved to Carbondale to be near their children. For much of his working life, Larry was a night watchman at Swords Veneer and Lumber Company until the plant closed, then finished his laborer career at X-Pac shipping John Deere implements. He was a member of Moose Lodge 190 in Rock Island, Illinois and enjoyed bowling, fishing, reading and watching TV. He had a talent for Hollywood trivia.

 Survivors include two children: Kristine Lynn and Dorothy Mary Schachel, both of Carbondale; brothers: John Schachel and Michael Schachel, both of Spring, Texas and sisters: Mary Ann Reagan of Rock Island and Pat Walker of Spring, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joy in 2020; brother William; sisters Sharon and Donna and brother-in-law: Jim Walker.

 A memorial mass will be held Monday, October 7, 2024 at 11:00 am at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, Iowa. The services will be livestreamed on Powell Funeral Home facebook page.
