Larry Detrick, 73, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Monday, December 09, 2013 at his home. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Thursday, December 12, 2013, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. that evening. A celebration of life will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 13th, at the Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge #1003 where friends may share memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Born August 25, 1940 in rural New London, IA, Larry Wayne was the son of Rex Emerson and Mildred (Bird) Detrick. He attended Bethany Rural School. He married Betty Lou Dodson in Ft. Madison. He later married Mary Lue Knifong, who survives. For 15 years, Larry worked for Henry County as a heavy equipment operator. He then was a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi River. He later owned and operated Detrick's Scrap Metal, a metal recycling business. A practical joker, Larry enjoyed telling stories and visiting with his many friends. He was an avid card player and enjoyed gambling. Favorite hobbies were traveling, fishing and hunting. He lived every day to the fullest and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Many Sundays were spent at the Sanford Cabin near Boyleston Bridge. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Mt. Pleasant; five children, Melanie (Richard) O'Neill, Deb (Tim) Stookesberry, Linda (Kevin) Barton, Bobby Detrick, and Melissa (Rodney) Stewart all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Fonda (Howard) Arbogast of New London; two brothers, Dennis (Sharon) Detrick and Bob (Sherrill) Detrick all of Mt. Pleasant; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Preceding Larry in death are his parents; a brother, Jim Detrick; and a sister, Donna Shaw.
