Korene Ethel Wirtz was born November 9, 1913 in LaPorte City, Iowa the daughter of August and Irene (Anton) Stahnke. She graduated from LaPorte City, High School and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught in rural schools in Chester, Iowa and Webster City, Iowa. She then received her B.A. degree from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado. She taught public school in Cedar Rapids until 1964. On June 10, 1964 she was united in marriage to Dr. Robert Wirtz in Cedar Rapids. They lived in Wellman until Dr. Wirtz died on April 24, 2001. Then Korene moved to Clinton, Iowa to be near her remaining sister. Korene enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, flower gardening, and traveling. She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren, Embroidery Club, Garden Club, and the Vanguard Club. Korene died on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehab Center in Clinton, Iowa following a long illness at the age of 91 years. Korene is survived by a Stepson - Dr. Larry Wirtz and wife Carolyn of Eugene, Oregon; a step daughter - Cozette Millice and husband Jim of Wellman; 4 step grandchildren; 1 step great grandchild; a sister - Marlys Smith of Clinton, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother - Harold Stahnke, and 2 sisters - Cleo Brecher and Edna Glasener.
A Memorial Fund has been estblished for the English River Church of the Brethren, Clinton Hospice, and Eagle Poing Nursing and Rehab Ceneter.
