IOWA CITY-Kevin Ray Hess (the "Grizz"), 51, of Iowa City died at home in the presence of family on Saturday, March 22, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Kevin was born on July 19, 1962 in San Diego, CA. He spent his early childhood in Montana before moving to Washington, IA. As an adventurous young man and a jack-of-all-trades, he joined the U.S. Army in 1980 and married Elizabeth Ann Scott on July 30, 1983. They were later divorced. He remained in the army until 1989, serving in many locations and capacities. Over the years, Kevin worked several jobs but especially enjoyed mechanics and welding. He also enjoyed fishing, biking, camping, leather working, yard work, and miniature models. He will be remembered as a loving son, father, brother, and friend. Surviving are daughter Jayme and husband Raymond Frye of Orange City, IA, daughter Sara Hess of Iowa City, and son Jason Hess of Iowa City; mother and step-father Patricia and Greg Weber of Keota; brother Arthur Hess and friend Misty Bruner of Hills; sister Alice Hess and partner Sarah McCrea of Ridgedale, MO; aunts and uncles Darlene and Ed Anderson of Boulder, MT, Margie and Ben Pascoe, Valerie and John Tadday, Tammy and John Paul Cooper and Patty Johnson, all of Butte, MT, Jody and Tim Raburn of Magnolia, Texas, Sandy and Dwight Williams of Richland, Sara and Dan Veerhusen of Cedar Rapids, Linda and Charles McNurlen of Carlyle, IL and Annette and Roger Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; many cousins; and special friends Bonnie Van Zuuk, Nate Jensen, Gene Perkins and Bernie Redmon. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Hess; grandparents Art Hess, Mary Hastings, Dorothy ahd Herman Johnson and uncle Skip Johnson. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 25 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, and services will be held on Wednesday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. with lunch to follow at Holy Trinity Parish Hall. Honoring Kevin's wishes, his ashes will be spread over his father's grave in Jefferson City, MT. In lieu of flowers, a general memorial has been established.
