Keith Allen Long, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, formerly of the Danville and Ottumwa, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at New London Specialty Care. An open visitation will be held from 10-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where friends may sign the register book and leave memorials. A private memorial service will be held at the Olson-Powell Chapel with Pastor Bryan Katchay officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Henry County Honor Guard. Memorials have been established to Danville Community School District Foundation and Great River Hospice. Born August 17, 1925 in rural Henry County near Winfield, he was the son of Charles and Jessie (Griffith) Long. Keith grew up in Henry County attending country schools near his farm. He was a 1943 graduate from Crawfordsville High School where he participated in baseball, basketball, track and fine arts. On October 2, 1948, he married Vonda Rose in Washington, IA. Keith and Vonda spent most of their married life in Ottumwa residing there for 45 years. She preceded him in death on September 8, 2000. Keith was a WWII United States Marine Veteran having served in the Southwest Pacific from 1943-1946. In April of 2008, he was a member of the first Iowa WWII Honor Tour to Washington DC. On Veteran's Day 2015, he was the recipient of the Veterans Honor Quilt. He worked for John Morrell and Company in Ottumwa, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and later as an accessor for the city of Ottumwa. An avid sports enthusiast, Keith enjoyed following local high school athletic teams. He was a lifetime fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. He loved spending time with his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include a daughter, Sheila (Bill) Townsend of Danville, IA; a son, Mike (Shirley) Long of Mt. Pleasant, IA; 3 grandchildren, Kendra (Scott) Dudley of Ottumwa, IA, Justin Long of Mt. Union, IA, and Brent (Desiree) Townsend of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; 5 great grandchildren, Mason Tubb, Austin Dudley, Zoe and Zane Long, and William Townsend. Also surviving are 2 step-grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) Baker and Kim (Keith) Perron all of Mt. Pleasant, IA; 5 step great grandchildren, Galen, Tenley and Lauren Perron, and Owen and Molly Baker; a brother-in-law, Basil Rose of Florida; and 2 sisters-in-law, Shirley Rose of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Doris Hulen of Ottumwa, IA. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Vonda; 3 brothers, Orville, Lyle and Kenneth; and 2 sisters, Leota and Lorraine.
