Katie Borntreger (98) passed away on April 25, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Katherine J. "Katie" Borntreger was born September 28, 1912, in Reno County Kansas, the daughter of Joseph M. and Lydia (Hochstetler) Schrock. She was married to Jacob Y. Borntreger on January 28, 1940, in Buchanan County, Iowa. The family moved to Missouri, then to Kalona, Iowa in 1959. Katie was a resident at the Kalona Valley Apartments from 1983 through late 2009. Katie accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized. She was a charter member of the Full Gospel Revival Center in Kalona. Katie was a dedicated woman of God enjoying the simple things in life and helping others. She had a song for every occasion and was very bold in her witness for Christ, faithfully living by her convictions. Katie is survived by six children and spouses: Jonas and Marlene Borntreger of Oxford, Iowa, Lydia and Russell Chorpening of Shell Lake, Wisconsin, Joe and Esther Borntreger of El Paso, Texas, Sarah and Anthony Yoder of Kalona, Iowa, Amos and Mary Borntreger of Sarasota, Florida and Malinda and Richard Meeks of Mountain Home, Arkansas; 26 grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Lydia (Mrs. Noah J.) Gingerich and Lizzie, (Mrs. Levi N.) Hochstetler of Clark, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, a daughter Barbara, a great granddaughter Britton, 4 brothers and a sister. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Kalona Mennonite Church. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be held Thursday from12:00 - 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home, Kalona, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established for Paloma Ministries (Katie's son Joe, missionary to Mexico), or Pleasantview Home. The family extends their sincere gratitude for the prayers and many acts of kindness and sympathy shown them during this time of loss.
