Katie Ann (Schrock) Yoder Swartzentruber was born June 2, 1924 in Hartville, Ohio the daughter of Peter and Katie (Miller) Schrock. She has lived in the Kalona community since 1944. On January 1, 1945 she married Ray Yoder in Kalona, he died in July of 1948. On July 3, 1949 she married Eli Swartzentruber in Kalona. She was a rug weaver, and owned and operated Katie's Flowers in Kalona for ten years. She was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church, where she enjoyed being with her church family and attending sewing circle. She was a lifetime member of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce, and she managed the Kalona state fair booth for many years. She hosted Kalona tours demonstrating her rug weaving. She volunteered at the Crowded Closet for many years. Katie enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, playing games, plants, and she loved spending time with her family. Katie died on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 87 years. Katie is survived by five children Verton Yoder (Pat) of Mishawaka, IN; Barb Miller (John) of Kalona; Laban Swartzentruber (Kathy) of Junction City, KS; Joe Swartzentruber (Deb) of Kalona; Jim Swartzentruber (Sherry) of Kalona; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two brothers - Mose Schrock of Hartville, OH; Sam Schrock of Townville, PA; and two sisters - Lydiann Weaver of Elroy, IN; and Barbara Coblentz of Belle Center, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband's Ray and Eli; a grandchild; and six brothers and sisters. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor's John King, Floyd Helmuth and Floyd Yutzy will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Mennonite Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
