Kathryn Hannum

Kathryn Hannum, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, November 02, 2011, at her home at Sunnybrook Assisted Living. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 7, 2011, beginning at noon at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8th, at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Herb Shafer officiating. Burial will be at the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Girl Scouts of Shining Trail Council, Inc. and First United Methodist Church. The daughter of Clarence and Ethel (Taft) Smith, Kathryn Ruth was born on October 4, 1914 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. She attended Mt. Pleasant Schools graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1933. On July 24, 1935, she married Robert Wendell Hannum in Monmouth, IL. He preceded her in death in June 1987. For 22 years Kathryn worked as a secretary alongside her husband at his business Hannum's Plumbing. They sold the business in 1976 when they retired. An active member of the community, Kathryn was involved in the Henry County Health Center Auxiliary, TTT Chapter DD, Questers, Country Club on the River, and several bridge clubs. She also served as a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. Survivors include five children, Ethel (John) Harvoy of Sun City, AZ, Sally (David) Leatherby of Sacramento, CA, Delores (Bill) Brooks of Roseville, CA, Nancy (Rodney) Wittich of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Kathy (James Garrett) Hannum of Waukon, IA; two sisters, Louise Trueblood of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Beverly (Allan) Griggs of Washington, IA; one brother, Wendell (Margaret) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, IA; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great grandchildren. Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, William; one grandchild; one great grandchild; two great-great children; four brothers, Edward, Carroll, Walter, and Paul Smith; and one sister, Emma Jane Hedges.
