Wellman-Kathryn Bernice Yoder was born December 3, 1920, near Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Omer and Nettie (Hooley) Yoder. She attended Poplar Grove rural school. Kathryn was united in marriage to Daniel Mark Yoder on October 27, 1944 at West Union Church, rural Parnell. They made their home in rural Parnell until moving to Wellman in 1989. Kathryn was an active volunteer at the Crowded Closet in Iowa City. She was known as the “pie lady” for making the pies for DJ’s Casual Café in Wellman. Kathryn was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church and later the Wellman Mennonite Church, where she had been active in teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, chorister and WMSC. Kathryn died Saturday, December 23, 2022 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 102.
She is survived by her children, Jackie Hansen (Kevin Vickers) of Mediapolis, Julia Geer (Robert) of Witcha, Kansas and Marsha Miller of Burlington; a grandson, Paul Vanley (Charice); 5 great grandchildren; bonus brother and sister, Keith Collins and Nila Gene Olson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Merlyn Yoder and 2 brothers Russell L. Yoder and Duane Yoder.
Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 am on Friday, December 30, 2022, at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for the Crowded Closet in Iowa City.
