Kathleen Jeanette Swartzendruber was born December 25, 1925, near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Ray A. and Kathryn Pearl (Miller) Yoder. She grew up in the Kalona community. After graduating from Center High School and attending a year of college, she taught in rural schools for 5 years. She married Dale Swartzendruber, June 26, 1949, at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. They lived in California, Indiana, and Nebraska before moving to the Pleasantview community in Kalona in 2008. Kathleen taught English as a second language for 15 years at Lincoln Literacy Council in Lincoln, NE, and worked at the MCC store in Seward, NE for 20 years Kathleen is a member of the Beth-El Mennonite Church, Milford, NE. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was active in WMSC. She most recently attended Kalona Mennonite Church. Kathleen died on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 86 years. She is survived by her husband, Dale of Kalona, 4 children- Karl (Lynn) Swartzendruber of Plano, TX, Myra (Patrick) Tierney of Lakewood, CO, John (Evonne) Swartzendruber of Indianapolis, IN and David (Kay) Swartzendruber of Lakewood, CO; 7 grandchildren; 2 brothers- Robert K. Yoder of Kalona and Hobert Yoder of Iowa City and a sister, Marjorie Waybill of Harrisonburg, VA. She is preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Sara Kay Swartzendruber. Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in Kalona. Rev. Scott Swartzendruber will officiate. Burial will be in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A general memorial fund has been established. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
