Kathleen "Kate" A. Waln

Kathleen “Kate” A. Waln, age 78, of rural Amana, passed away Friday, October 9, 2020, at Mercy Hospital, in Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 15, 2020 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. There will be a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed in Kathleen’s name to the Safe Haven of Iowa County or the donor’s choice. Face masks and social distancing is required.

Kate is survived by her husband Richard of 58 years; two daughters, Nancy (Mark) Dvorak, of Keystone and Gina Kolsto, of Walford; five grandchildren Dylan (Maggie) Dvorak, of Keystone, Lance (Hannah) Dvorak, of Chelsea, Onnah Dvorak, of Keystone, Kevin Kolsto, Jr., of Iowa City and Jordan Kolsto, of Iowa City; two great grandchildren Brantley and Hudson Dvorak; and one brother Raymond (Claudette) Ballard, of Norway. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Agnes (Kimm) Ballard and a son-in-law Kevin Kolsto, Sr.

Kathleen Ballard was born December 25, 1941, in rural Norway, the daughter of Harry and Agnes (Kimm) Ballard. She graduated from Norway High School in 1960 and later attended Kirkwood Community College. On August 1, 1962, she was united in marriage to Richard Earl Waln, in Watkins. Kate worked at Amana Refrigeration for 28 years as the executive assistant. She was on the board of directors at the Amana Credit Union for six years, a member of the Country Friends Dance Club and assisted with 4-H for 10 years. Kate enjoyed flower gardening, dancing, playing Euchre, reading, doing water aerobics and watching birds. She especially loved her family and her cats Mario, Dolly and LC. She always put her loving family first.
