Katherine Marie Avard was born on January 7, 1924, near Ladora, IA the daughter of Roy and Anna Leitzman Bair. She attended Lincoln #2 country school and graduated from Victor High School. She taught country school one year. Katherine was united in marriage to Forrest W. Ballard on April 1, 1945. Katherine worked as a caretaker for families that need assistance. She also worked at the English Valleys Cooperative Creamery in North English, worked in Housekeeping at the University of Iowa and retired after 20 years at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Forrest preceded her in December 1971. She later married Gerald M. Avard on June 22, 1973. They lived on a farm east of North English before moving into town. Gerald preceded her in death in January 1994. Katherine has lived in Iowa County all of her life. She loved to sew, especially for her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid crosswords fan. She died following a brief illness, on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at her home in North English. Katherine lived 83 years, 1 month and 4 days. She is survived by a daughter, Marcia Cox and her husband Ron of South English, IA; 3 grand children: Angela (Robert) Weber of South English, IA, Ronald Dietze of Poulsbo, WA, Larry (Keya) Cox of North English. 8 great-grandchildren: Annie (Zachary) Schott; Alicia (Jake) Weber-Moyer; Haylee Dietze; Meghan Dietze: Tricia Dietze: Courtney, Leia & Kristen Cox; 4 great great grandchildren: Bentley & Forrest Schott: Mallory & Bryce Moyer. Also surviving are brothers: Archie Bair of Brooklyn & Edward Bair of North English. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and sister, Naomi Bair. A celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery near South English. Visitation for Katherine will be from 4 pm to 7 pm Monday, February 12, 2007 at the funeral home.
