KEOTA- Karyl Flander, age 87, of Keota died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Karyl was born on April 30, 1926, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, the daughter of J. Perry and Sarah Mildred (Hall) Cater. She grew up in Geneseo, Illinois, moved to Harper and graduated from Keota High School. On August 18, 1951 she married Peter "Stibe" Flander at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Karyl worked for United Airlines in Chicago, in a real estate office in Washington, D.C., managed a credit union in Washington, Iowa and as a clerk at Natural Gas Pipeline in Harper. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, where she served on many boards, committees and programs, the Altar and Rosary Society, where she was an officer and co-chairman for church suppers, Den Mother for Cub Scouts and served on the Wilson Memorial Library Board for 3 years. Karyl enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, traveling, reading, bird watching and counted cross stitch. Survivors include her husband: Peter "Stibe" Flander of Keota; four children: Mark (Nadine) Flander of Sidney, Nebraska, Chris (Jane) Flander of Oskaloosa, Melody (Ron) Bombei of Keota and Pete (Sharen) Flander of Louisburg, Kansas; ten grandchildren: Andy Flander, Grant Flander, Alex Flander, Neil, Rex and Danielle Bombei, Amanda Flander, Kyle Flander, Shana Ryan and Katie Danders; 11 great grandchildren and one sister: Donna Romine of Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Daphnia Kensinger and Gloria Trier. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, with Revs. Jake Greiner and Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 4:00. A memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association, Wilson Memorial Library, Holy Trinity Choir or Keokuk County Hospice.
