Joyce E. Van Dorin, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away March 2, 2018, at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant.
Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 6th, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, March 7th, at Salem Friends Church with Pastors Jared Haley and Tom Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Salem East Cemetery. Born July 23, 1927, on a farm, four miles east of Salem, IA, she was the daughter of Iliff and Gladys (Hallowell) Shumaker. Joyce was the 2nd of five children. She attended Center Country School through 4th grade. The family moved to Salem and Joyce attended Salem Community School, graduating in 1945. In high school she played the snare drum in the band, was a member of the girls basketball team and a cheerleader for the boys basketball team.
On October 26, 1946, Joyce married Kenneth Dale Van Dorin. He passed away on December 1, 1994. Kenny and Joyce gave their lives to Jesus at the altar of Salem Friends Church in 1947 and spent their lives serving Him in many ways at this church and the Open Bible Church in Mt. Pleasant. Joyce served as a treasurer, Sunday School teacher, elder, Bible School leader, youth group leader, camp counselor, and on many committees.
Joyce also had many talents in her home; building needed closets, wallpapering, gardening, canning, sewing for herself and four daughters and raising chickens. She did babysitting, hair perms and ironing for other families. Jobs outside her home included; Sheaffer Pen Co., J.C. Penney, cooking at the Salem Elementary School for twenty years, taking care of elderly folks in their own homes and running detasseling crews in the summer.
Kenny and Joyce raised four girls in a two-bedroom, one bath home but still took in guest speakers, singers and visiting missionaries for meals and overnight lodging.
Due to declining health, Joyce spent the last 11 years of her life at the Willows Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. She continued to attend her church faithfully with rides provided by the Friends Church family.
Survivors include four daughters, Sherrie (Don) Sumner of Ponca City, OK, Jeanette (Carroll) Syfert of Salem, IA, Barbara (Ted) Horn of West Burlington, IA, and Tami (Bruce) Noble of Salem, IA; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Shumaker of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three sisters, Gwendolyn Foss of Solon, IA, Darlene Owens of Idaho Falls, ID, and Charlotte Bailey of Independence, MO. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and one granddaughter, Lisa (Sumner) Hancock.
