SIGOURNEY-Joyce Long, age 74, of Sigourney, died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at her home.
Joyce Elaine Mullins Long was born September 26, 1942, at home at Paton in Greene County, Iowa. Her parents were Leslie and Elva (Vought) Mullins. She graduated from Paton Consolidated School in 1960. Joyce then went to Des Moines and worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company from 1960 until 1964. She was married to Stanton Long on November 21, 1964, by Rev. Cyril Ashton in Farnhamville United Methodist Church. They made their home near Sigourney on a farm. Joyce worked a short time for attorney J. Leo Martin until his death and then at the Hayesville Savings Bank for five years until March of 1970. She was a member of the Lancaster Christian Church, serving as Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher, beginning in 1973, and church treasurer, beginning in 1972. She was in these capacities until she could no longer serve. Joyce also had been Sunday School Superintendent, served on the church board and was a member of the Lancaster Heritage Foundation and Farm Bureau. She loved her home and her family and enjoyed cooking and baking decorated cakes, especially for birthdays and special occasions.
Survivors include her husband: Stanton; two sons: Brian and friend, Stephanie and Scott and wife Nicole; grandchildren: Caitlin and Blane and Stephanie's children: Dana and Jordan; three sisters: Janice Gilley, Marilyn Cody and Jolene (Chuck) Miller and a brother: Derwood Mullins. She was preceded in death by her parents: Leslie and Elva June Mullins in 2010.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2017, at the Lancaster Christian Church, with Pastors Dirk Alspach and Mark Doll officiating. Burial will be at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney.
