Joseph Samuel Nowell Sr was born January 5, 1927 in Moscow, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Ruth (Kaufmann) Nowell. Joseph lived and worked in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa until 1984 when he moved to Wellman. He was custodian for 12 years at the U of Iowa in Iowa City then in 1989 he retired. Joseph died on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 85. Joseph is survived by a son Joseph S. Nowell Jr of Iowa City, Iowa; a daughter Susan (William) Willis of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a step daughter Barbara Johnson of Iowa City, Iowa; two grandchildren Cody Johnson and Allie Bonser; five step grandchildren Michael Willis, Bryce Willis, Tiffany Warden, Marcus Reysack, and Samantha Johnson. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Samuel Nowell, Richard Nowell, and George Nowell; and a grandson Lyle Ray Johnson.
