Joseph Howard Saltzman was born March 1, 1930 in Shickley, Nebraska, the son of Daniel and Helen (Sutter) Saltzman. In 1937 the family moved to Keota, Iowa where his father worked for A.C. Gingerich. He attended Keota High School and Iowa Mennonite School. Joe lived in Wellman from 1957 - 1999, when he moved to the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. Joe worked for many years for Maple Crest turkey farms in the processing department until 1968 and then worked in food service at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City for 20 years retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. He enjoyed volunteering with his church and Mennonite Disaster Service. His hobbies were wood working, reading, playing dominos and doing word find puzzles. Joe died on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 83 years. Joe is survived by a sister-in-law Alberta Saltzman of Mount Pleasant, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Elmer, Harold, Wilfred, and two sisters Mary and Vera. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. Pastor Nathan Ramer will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4 PM on Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman and from 9:00 AM until service time on Monday at the Wellman Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for Wellman Senior Center.
