Joseph Conaway

Joseph H. Conaway, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, IA passed away, Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at the Henry County Health Center. Open visitation will be held on Sunday, November 24th from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Barker Cemetery in Scotland County, MO. In lieu of flowers and memorials, the family requests prayers from their friends. Born February 25, 1934, in Downing, MO, Joseph Howard was the son of Hubert Richard and Madeline Augusta (Peterson) Conaway. "Joe" was a 1952 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He enlisted in the Navy Reserves for two years, and then went on to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA, and served mostly in the Mediterranean region. On September 19, 1954, he married Donna Johnson at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. After his military service, Joe operated the Conaway service station. Later he farmed for Gilbert Sherman, sold fertilizer for the Standard Oil Company and sold seed corn for Dan McAllister and the Ramy Seed Company of Minnesota. Joe owned his own semi-trailer truck and drove for Warren Transport. Joe thoroughly enjoyed working on his own farm and spending time outdoors. He shared his love of horses with his nieces and nephews, giving them countless rides when they came to visit. Joe was a staunch member of the Salem Stub Coffee Club and was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife, Donna Conaway of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a sister, Janice (Donald) Boyer of Oakville, IA; three sisters-in-law, Helen Clawson of Burlington, IA, Hazel Weaver of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Ruth (Joe) Klopfenstein of Winfield, IA; a brother-in-law, Wendell "Barney" Woodsmall of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Alice Woodsmall; and by two nieces and two nephews.
